A key factor in muscle sparking knee surgery is protecting and preserving muscles. This is particularly true for knee joint replacement. The muscles provide strength and control of your knee. The muscles are also an important factor in regaining motion after knee surgery. As you would expect, not cutting or detaching muscles around the knee results in less pain, better motion, and faster recovery. Witness these positive results first hand by watching our patients share their insights.

At Madison Orthopedics, we offer the innovative subvastus approach for muscle sparing total knee arthroplasty surgery. In the subvastus approach for knee replacement surgery, as practiced when appropriate by Dr. Eysser, the orthopedic surgeon at Madison Orthopedics, no cut is made through the underlying thigh muscle, which is called the quadriceps. Instead, the joint is approached from below the muscle. This has huge advantages, such as not weakening the thigh muscles, and is the reason that most patients are able to walk, even without holding on to any walking aids, almost immediately after the operation.

The standard approach to knee replacement involves cutting the quadriceps tendon. If the quadriceps tendon is cut, patients typically need walking aids for 3 to 6 weeks to allow this cut to heal. Also, cutting the quadriceps causes more pain and delays the recovery from the operation.
